On a perfect Sydney summer’s day members and guests gathered at Dickens’ statue in Sydney’s Centennial Parkland to celebrate Dickens’ 206th birthday with cake and bubbly. The occasion was also used to launch the Dickens Fellowship 112th International Conference – Boz in Oz: Charles Dickens’ Colonial Connections– to be held in Sydney, 25-30 October 2018.

President Louise Owens, who spoke about the forthcoming conference, then introduced Dr John Vallance, the NSW State Librarian and Chief Executive to officially launch it. This was followed by Geoff Usher who gave his very popular reading of two of Henry Lawson’s poems about Dickens. Then Vice President Walter Mason gave an enthusiastic endorsement of the conference before Dr John Vallance cut Dickens’ birthday cake and we toasted both Dickens and the forthcoming conference with a spot of bubbly.
